Our Story

Salt Lake Figure Skating began in 1997 as Timpanogos Figure Skating Club, founded by a small group of skating parents and a coach in Utah County.

At the time, Utah County did not yet have an indoor ice rink. The club’s skaters trained on Saturday mornings at the outdoor rink at Seven Peaks, where families sometimes swept and squeegeed the ice before practice. The skating season lasted only as long as the winter weather allowed.

The opening of Peaks Ice Arena helped the young club grow, but the defining experience of its early years came with the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Thirty-nine club skaters, adults, and coaches participated in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Salt Lake City. Months of carpools, rehearsals, and shared work brought the club’s families together and helped establish the strong volunteer spirit on which the organization was built.

As its skaters progressed, the club needed greater access to training ice. It eventually moved its primary activities north, first to the Utah Olympic Oval and then to the Salt Lake City Sports Complex.

On February 18, 2004, the club officially became Salt Lake Figure Skating and established the Sports Complex as its home rink.

Today, SLFS welcomes skaters of different ages, abilities, disciplines, and ambitions from across the Wasatch Front. From its beginnings on outdoor ice to its home in a 2002 Olympic training venue, the club continues to be shaped by the same things that sustained its founders: a love of skating, commitment to one another, and the willingness of members and families to help the whole community succeed.
